Scaling bank consolidation: a platform blueprint for efficiency, stability and future growth

Client from 2003, ABN AMRO Bank N.V., Securities Services is a leading Dutch bank and a trusted provider of custody and securities services, offering institutional clients a comprehensive range of solutions across global custody, asset servicing, clearing, and collateral management. ABN AMRO is supported by advanced technology, local market expertise, and a client-focused approach.

A platform-driven transformation enabling scalable bank consolidation, operational efficiency, regulatory compliance and sustainable cross-border growth.

ABN AMRO has a long history of growth through consolidation. In Germany, that journey is entering a new phase with the acquisition of Hauck Aufhäuser Lampe, bringing together four business units across multiple countries and creating the foundation for the third largest private bank in the market. The challenge is no longer just to close a single deal, but to turn a structurally complex landscape – different geographies, products, client structures and regulatory environments – into a scalable integration capability that can support further organic and inorganic growth.

Together with Objectway, ABN AMRO has chosen to approach the HAL integration as a platform‑driven transformation rather than a traditional data migration. Both institutions were already running on Objectway’s core banking platform, but their environments had evolved independently over time, creating two different cores shaped by distinct business priorities. The integration journey is about standardising both environments onto the ABN AMRO core banking target architecture in Germany, so that products, pricing, client relationships and regulatory workflows run on a single, coherent platform. Phased migrations and embedded governance ensure that this transition happens in a controlled way, with full data traceability and compliance with ECB, BaFin and DORA requirements. The model also establishes a repeatable integration blueprint for future acquisitions.

The impact of this model is already clear. ABN AMRO Germany now works towards a single target architecture instead of a hybrid setup, with a phased plan running through 2028. The new platform will support cross‑border activity across Germany, the Netherlands and Luxembourg on a common core, turning consolidation from an exceptional one‑off project into a repeatable capability and a structural advantage for the third‑largest private bank in Germany.

A merger is never “just” a technical migration. A successful migration brings together clients, products, employees, and technology, all moving in sync to unlock real, long-term value. In our joint journey integrating two leading banks in Germany — HAL and ABN AMRO — the focus goes beyond connecting systems. It’s about trusted partnership, alignment, and a shared ambition across every layer.

Consolidation creates a real challenge for banks. On one side, they must unlock synergies and simplify their IT landscapes. On the other side, they must meet regulatory requirements. That is why we focus on a scalable integration approach: one platform, one data model and one governance framework. By doing this, banks can integrate acquisitions more efficiently, reduce complexity and avoid the risk of fragmented IT systems.
